Such a great post. I love Tori Amos, and her first album is one of the best of that era, forceful and fragile at the same time. I worked at Warner Music Belgium for a while. Sadly, I never got to meet her, but from what I heard from the promo team, she was a joy to work with, a truly kind person.

Loved reading this! Religion and christianity have always been a lush theme in her music, and as a fellow ex-christian, those lyrics go so hard for me too. Also love the “really deep thoughts” line because if anyone knows anything about really deep thoughts, it’s Tori:) She’s so self aware there hahaha.

Exactly!

She has a well-earned reputation for being "out there," but the art of writing lyrics lies in getting people to feel something specific without explicitly *telling* them how to feel. (This is something I struggle with on the rare occasions when I try to write lyrics or poetry.)

Thanks for reading!

Great post! I agree in the significance of this Tori Amos album. It pretty much rocked my world in 1993.

By the time I discovered it, Under the Pink was out, and I got the full one-two punch of awesomeness! :)

So true! I actually met Tori Amos in an elevator at that time! She couldn't have been nicer. She even got me 10th row center tickets to her next show in Chicago! It was pretty magical!

Like you, I was introduced to 'Little Earthquakes' by a partner, a few years after the album was released. It immediately filled a void that I didn't know needed filling. I have loved her ever since.

Little Earthquakes was so incredible! It’s still in my rotation (as well as several of her others). It was one that I listened to obsessively in my car and sang loud! I got to see her in concert maybe 92 or 93, and she was amazing live! The 90s were when women (especially alternative) just smashed it!
