I work best when I have a theme. When I have an overarching idea to map my smaller ideas onto, I find it easier to generate those smaller ideas.
So here’s an idea: what if we talk about a particular instrument each month, and explore the musicians and the types of music that thrive through those instruments? A sort of “Musical Zodiac” exploring different instruments' unique histories and contributions to our great big musical tapestry!
Anyone who served time in a band knows that we associate certain behavioral traits with each instrument or instrument family. This is completely arbitrary and non-scientific, of course, but that has never stopped astrologists… so, hey…
Let’s Start With “Capricorn”
In the spirit of arbitrariness, I’m starting “now” - which makes the next sign Capricorn, which begins (this year) on 21 December. According to Google random AI helper:
“Some say that people with this sign are responsible, ambitious, and sensitive. Capricorns are known for being dedicated, hardworking, and resilient.”
I guess that means drums will have to wait for another month.
But seriously, there is one section in every band that has earned a reputation as the anchor, the always flexible, the always steady:
The Bass
One of my first posts was about a bass player:
And Victor is just the tip of a very deep iceberg. I think you’ll enjoy some of the deep cuts, odd takes, and side journeys we can take while touring the bass section.
The Bottom.
The low-down funky nasty.
And if you have a suggestion for a future instrument/astrological sign pairing, let me know!
